Sketch Tuesday: Something Spicy

Assignment:  Sketch a spice or spice bottle.

“Two Spice Bottles”

Big Ladybug has not been introduced to drawing still-life art yet, so this was a great assignment for her.

A VERY LONG time ago I used to have time to sketch, paint, create, and I loved it.  So I decided to put everything else aside and join her this time.  I pulled out the graphite pencils and kneaded eraser I picked up for her several months ago, and we had a little art lesson.  I am a little rusty, but I was able to show her how to create depth and shade.  She practiced shading, but enjoyed kneading the eraser more than anything.  She was also surprised that her mom could draw a little.

MFW 1st Grade: Week #29

We completed 4 more parables from the New Testament.  We are really enjoying these stories, and discussing what Jesus is teaching us through these.

A Farmer and His Seeds

Bible Craft:  Big Ladybug made some Bible time sandals.  We traced her foot on some cardboard, cut it out, and hot glued some felt on top. Then she had to measure out 42” of ribbon for each sandal and we weaved it through slits we made in the cardboard and felt.  She thought these were pretty comfy :)

Tree Study: OHC Spring 2011

For science this week we worked on our seasonal tree study from Handbook of Nature Study.  Since the fall we have been observing the Flowering Crabapple in our front yard.

This is a printable notebook page from Handbook of Nature Study.

We used a page out of our Considering God's Creation book to help us observe our tree more closely.  (We are using this great book for summer science with our co-op :)

She gathered different parts of the tree to add to her notebook page.

She looked closely with a magnifying glass, felt the leaves, fruit, and bark.  She measured the trunk, and smelled the leaves and the bark.

We really enjoyed doing this study together.  We had some great one-on-one time while the little ones were napping :)

Are you getting out and enjoying nature?

We have really enjoyed all of the studies that we have participated in, thanks to Barb at Handbook of Nature Study!  She has so many good ideas and you can pick and choose what studies interest you the most :)

MFW 1st Grade: Week #28

Bible:  This week we covered 4 stories in the New Testament.  Big Ladybug reads the story in her Bible reader, and then she looks it up in her Discoverer's Bible and reads it again.

Fishermen craft the girls enjoyed making.

Healing the Man on the Mat

Jesus Calls Matthew

The 12 Apostles

(I just love how Jesus’ finger is pointing as he is picking his apostles:)020

Big Ladybug had fun making her apostles craft.

Science with Plants: Growing

Big Ladybug gets so excited to measure her plants every morning to see how much they have grown.

Plant #1: sits on the window sill and gets water every 3 days. It’s growing nicely.

Plant #2: sits on the window sill and gets no water. It is growing VERY slowly.

Plant #3: sits in a dark cabinet and gets watered every 3 days. It is growing, but has small yellow leaves.

MFW 1st Grade: Week 27

Well we have finished with the Old Testament and began the New Testament this week.

An Angel Speaks to Mary

The girls had fun tracing their hands and feet to make this angel craft.  You can find the directions for it here at DTLK.

Jesus is Born

Big Ladybug and I made a baby Jesus craft.  I got the idea from Danielle's Place.  It is a “members only” craft, and I am not, so we just made our own version.

Jesus is Baptized

I had a craft planned for the last two stories, but we ran out of time.

But she did enjoy some books and a video.
