The kids and I went on a fall nature walk to observe and collect the different leaves.

Big Ladybug loves to blend her colored pencils to make different colors.  So we decided to try to blend the colors to match the leaves.

The kids then used the leaves to have some more art fun.

The kids at our  ECC co-op completed an Outdoor Hour Challenge from Handbook of Nature Study blog.

The kids were split the into 3 teams. Each team received 5 different varieties of fruit: 2 pears and 3 apples.  They could choose which 2 to study for their challenge.

The kids had a great time comparing and eating their specimens!

Do you need to “beef up” your science, or just add some nature to your studies?  Check out Barb’s blog Handbook of Nature Study and her ready-made lesson plans….you won’t be disappointed!

Learning Alongside My Children

Before having children I would have probably just said “eeewww,” and wouldn’t have paid much attention to this spider if I came across in my yard.

019

But now that I school my children, I can honestly say, I am learning right along with them…..and loving it!

I am learning to…organize my time and use it more wisely.

I am learning to… stop what I am doing and observe.

I am learning to…take advantage of a teaching moment.  I love the excitement and joy on their faces when they see something new, and their curiosity to learn about it.

I am learning to… realize how blessed I am to be given this opportunity to school my children.  It is the hardest, but most wonderful job I have ever been given.

I am learning to… take in the beauty of this world that God has created for us……and yes, that even includes this Black and Yellow Garden Spider.

MFW ECC Highlights: Week 2 Intro to the World

This week Monica at Discover Their Gifts is hosting MFW Highlights! Head over and check out what fun everyone is having exploring with My Father’s World!

This week we completed our introduction to the world.

Bible:

  • How people began to speak different languages
  • There is only ONE God for the WHOLE world
  • And this good news is for ALL people

Big Ladybug also began her prayer journal.  (I just love her drawings!)

biome

Science:

  • What is a Biome?
  • What types of plants and animals live in each biome?

Nature Walk:

This kids and I walked the neighborhood collecting leaves and bark.  We put them in a heavy book between pieces of paper to dry.  We will be making art with them later.

Art

015The teacher’s manual suggests paper dolls, but I ran across this on Art Projects for Kids.  I loved that it included their hand print and they got to use oil pastels.  (It suggested textured paper, but I think what I provided was a little too textured.)

The kids went creekin’ to see what they could find living in the water.  They are always up for tromping through the water!

I’ll be hosting the MFW Highlights next week and look forward to seeing what everyone has been up to!

Did you know??

Dogs often hesitate before going out in the rain. It's not because they're afraid of getting wet, but because the rain amplifies sound and hurts their sensitive ears.

Spring 2011: Plant & Flower Study

In My Father’s World 1st grade science this spring, we have been focusing on plants.  So far we have looked at seeds, germinated kidney beans, and experimented with how light and water effect plant growth.

The past 3 weeks we focused on plant parts and flowers.  We used Considering God’s Creation, Handbook of Nature Study, and Barb’s Outdoor Hour Challenge Garden Study and Plant Challenges to help us along.

We read out of Handbook of Nature Study.

The little ones enjoyed looking at it too!

We discussed the parts of the plant and looked closely at some grass roots.  She learned about chlorophyll and photosynthesis.  We also discussed pollination and completed Barb’s Outdoor Hour Challenge.

Big Ladybug enjoyed coloring and putting together the parts of the flower from Considering God’s Creation.  She glued salt on the plant and the bee’s legs to show pollen transfer.

044

She also wanted to sketch and watercolor some flowers.  However, she found it to be a little more difficult than she expected, so I helped her sketch them.

046

We studied the rose bush in our backyard.

She really enjoyed our nature walk to collect different kinds of leaves and doing the leaf rubbings.
