MFW 1st Grade- Week #9

Well we had another great week!  We are really getting into a routine and enjoying ourselves!

Bible:  This weeks memory verse:

A wise son heeds his father’s instruction, but a mocker does not listen to rebuke.            ~Proverbs 13:1

We also began to learn about the creation days this week.  We covered days 1 and 2.  Big Ladybug is now reading from her Bible reader and each day we cover she will be adding to a picture that she is making in her Bible Notebook.

Science:  We studied ocean life this week.  One of her experiments was exploring how seals are protected from the Arctic cold water by their layer of blubber.  Big Ladybug was shocked how cold the ice water was on her bare skin.  We put Crisco in a plastic bag and that was placed over her hand to act as a layer of blubber.  She was surprised how her hand was protected by the cold and kept warmer.

Planet Earth: Pole to Pole, Mountains & Deep Ocean DVD - Standard

She read her weekly library science books and also watched Plant Earth: Deep Ocean.

Big Ladybug had a great time with our art project this week!  She used paper mache’ for the first time and made a fish.  I got the instructions from allfreecrafts.com.  I picked up some sequins from the craft store and she added them as scales.  She is almost finished with it, she just needs to add some scales to the bottom.

We also did our other weekly school work, but nothing real exciting to blog about.  Big Ladybug learned to add double digits, she says that math is her favorite!  She is also doing very well with her language arts, writing, spelling, and reading.

Did you know???

The blue whale is the largest animal on our planet ever (exceeding the size of the greatest known dinosaurs) and has a heart is the size of a Volkswagen.

The oarfish is the longest bony fish in the world. It has a snakelike body sporting a magnificent red fin along its 15.25 m length, a horselike face and blue gills, and accounts for many sea-serpent sightings.

Check out how everyone else’s week went here!
