MFW 1st Grade: Week #18

Bible:  We are really enjoying the 2nd Grade: Finding God’s Promises, Positive Action bible curriculum.  It has several lessons focusing on the 10 Plagues of Egypt and the Passover so I paused MFW while working on this.

God brought about the plagues to make Pharaoh acknowledge Him and to free the Israelites from slavery. (I printed these little plague pictures for her Bible notebook from here.)

The 10 Plagues

1. Turned the water to blood, killing all the fish.

2. Frogs came out of the water and covered the land.

3. Dust on earth became bugs.

4. Swarms of flies.

5. All the Egyptians livestock dies.

6. Boils broke out on men and animals

7. Hail, thunder, and lightening through the land, killing the Egyptians that were out in the fields.

8. Locusts covered the land until it was dark.  They ate up everything that was growing.

9. Darkness over the land for 3 days.

10.  All first born Egyptians died, regardless of their age.

Can you imagine???  Wow!!!

What did we learn from this?

God wants us to put him first in all we do and He uses people to do his work.  God knows our hearts and He uses his power to help us.  We must not allow other things to take the place of God.  Jesus is our Passover Lamb and when we trust him, His blood cleanses us from all sin.

We focused on the following character traits.

Admitting when we are wrong.  Paying attention to what God is telling us.  Giving praise to the one true God and trusting Jesus to become our Lord and Savior, to assure we are going to heaven one day.

Passover was when God instructed the Hebrews to kill their most perfect lamb and place it’s blood on their doorway.  That night when the angel of death came to kill the first born of every family, he would skip over the Hebrew homes.

After this last plague, the Egyptians couldn’t get the Israelites out of Egypt fast enough!  After their 400 years of slavery, Moses was now responsible for getting the Israelites to their new promise land, Canaan.

God showed them he was still with them by guiding them through the desert with a pillar of cloud during the day, and a pillar of fire at night.

So how does God guide us today?

Through his word, the Bible, and God has given us the Holy- Spirit as our personal guide.

And this next piece of artwork I love.  I had to take Little Ladybug upstairs to put her down for a nap, so I asked Big Ladybug to do some work independently.  I asked her to draw how God guides her today.

In this picture, I am on the left with my teacher book and she is on the right reading her Bible to me.  We both have big red hearts, because we have the Holy Spirit in them.  I also love her fine details, right down to the ceiling fan above our kitchen table!

Science:  Since we paused our MFW for this short period, we decided to learn about camels and the desert.  Moses and the Egyptians used camels to travel through the desert, as well as, for food, wool, leather, and milk.

There are two types of camels.  I never real knew much about camels, they are pretty neat animals.

We also tried to make one out of a cardboard egg carton.  He had a hard time standing :)

Here are some library books we enjoyed.

Did you know ???

Contrary to popular belief, camels do not store water in their humps. Water is stored in their blood which allows them to go for several days without water or food. A camels hump is actually a reservoir of fatty tissue.  Their humps will actually shrink and fall to the side when they are in need of food.

We are picking back up with our My Father’s World next week.
