MFW 1st Grade- Week #10

It’s hard to believe that we have been schooling for 10 weeks already!

Bible:  We talked about the first 5 books of the Bible, which are called the Pentateuch, and were written by Moses.

Our Bible memory verse this week:

A heart at peace gives life to the body, but envy rots the bones.    Proverbs 14:30

Big Ladybug studied creation days 3 and 4, and added to her picture in her Bible notebook.  She is really enjoying the Bible reader and art activities.

She also finished her second Animal Tales booklet.   She loves to draw and color!

Science:  Big Ladybug studied the ‘Sun and Moon’ .   Here are some of the library books we read this week.

The Sun: Our Nearest Star (Let's-Read-and-Find-Out)Product DetailsProduct Details

She tried to do an experiment this week, but due to excessive winds, our weather was not cooperative!   Big Ladybug collected 4 items from around the house, and put them on a dark colored piece of construction paper in the sun.  The goal was to see how the sun fades the paper, but her paper kept blowing away and/or the sun kept hiding!  Hopefully she will get to do this next week!

However, she was able to use a flashlight to act as the sun.  She shone it on the globe to demonstrate which countries have daytime, while others have nighttime.

She is also keeping a science journal notebook.  After we read the weekly science books, we discuss key points and I write them down.  Big Ladybug then illustrates in it.  It is nothing fancy, but it helps keep track of the great stuff she is learning, and allows her to review it.

Did you know???

The Sun (our nearest star) is 93 million miles away from the Earth. Light from the Sun takes just over 8 minutes to arrive at Earth. It’s interesting to note, therefore, that if the Sun suddenly stopped shining altogether, it would take us about 8 minutes to realize that!

The moon is about 1/4 the size of the Earth.  From Earth, we always see the same side of the moon, which is only 59% of the moon's surface; the other side is always hidden.
