MFW 1st Grade- Week #7

Wow, what a busy week we had!  Wednesday we took a family field trip to the zoo, (I will share these pictures on another post soon) and Thursday we went to Slate Run Living Farm with our Little House in the Big Woods co-op class.  It was a lot of fun seeing all the animals and how they lived during that time period.   We had a great week, but now we have to catch up on some school work over the weekend…uugh.

 Bible:  This weeks memory verse:

Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing.  ~Proverbs 12:18

We drew our Bible Lands Map to refer to in future lessons, when studying Bible stories.   Big Ladybug liked the story that went along with drawing this, especially about the big water bug with 2 large antennae, can you see where that is?

We also introduced the globe, or in our case an inflatable globe ball….whatever works right?

Science:  This week we studied ‘rivers’.   We read books on rivers and talked about how they start, the different things that live in a river, and what they are used for.  We also watched the DK Eyewitness DVD Pond & River.

Our science experiment was filtering muddy water with sand and rocks.   I cut a paper carton and poked holes in the bottom.  The girls went out to gather some rocks, and Big Ladybug enjoyed making the muddy water.

I followed the directions in the MFW teachers manual, and my water filter failed!  Muddy water went in, and muddy water came out!  So we called Daddy to the rescue!  He changed what the instructions said to do and he put the sand on the bottom, a piece of an old t-shirt in the middle, and the rocks on top.   His filter worked great!

So while this was taking place, our Little Ladybug decided to make her own little sand experiment.  Oh… the joys of having a 2-year-old!

Did you know???  If all the world's water were fit into a gallon jug, the fresh water available for us to use would equal only about one tablespoon.
