MFW 1st Grade- Week #8

Well this week was great.  We went to the pumpkin patch with some cousins and Papa, followed by eating yummy fair junk food and seeing the animals.  Big Ladybug also got to spend one whole day at the local fair watching her cousins show their pigs and riding rides!  Not to mention we had a great week with school!

Bible:  Memory verse this week:

The Lord detests lying lips, but delights in men who are truthful.  ~Proverbs 12:22

She began the Old Testament timeline this week, which we set up in the kitchen.  Every week we will be adding to it as we study the Old Testament Bible stories. 

This is the beginning of the timeline.  The OT was originally written in Hebrew.  This is the first verse of the Bible and it says, In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

 

 

                  

Science:  We studied the ocean, waves, and the beach this week.

We had some fun with our experiments.  I found the Awesome Ocean Science book at the library and it is great.  The first experiment was looking at the beach shore and how the ocean can reshape it.  We saw how waves move up the beach and the undertow pulls the sand back out to the ocean.  The neighbor loves joining in on our science activities!

 

                 

 

Once we were finished, Big Ladybug couldn’t resist running her toes through the sand :)

 

 

Our other experiment was looking at what happens when fresh river water flows into the salty ocean.  The girls made salt water and put in the pop bottle on the right.  Then they put blue food coloring in the fresh water and slowly squirted it into the salt water.   The fresh water first forms a distinct layer on top of the salty water, until slowly they mix together.

    

                  

I  try to incorporate art into our school day every Friday.  Whether it is something out of her I Can Do All Things art book, or a special project.  I found this really great art book at the library and I absolutely LOVE it!  I researched this book a little more and found that it is a series of art crafting books, so we will definitely be using these throughout our school year.  You can check them out on Amazon.com just click here.
