MFW 1st Grade: Week 21

Bible:  The faithless will be fully repaid for their ways, and the good man rewarded for his.  ~Proverbs 14:14

Samuel

samuel eli

Samuel was a young man that was assisting a blind priest named Eli.  During this time God did not speak to people as he had in the past.

One night as Samuel and Eli were lying down, Samuel heard someone calling his name.  He assumed it was Eli, but after a few times they realized it was God calling to Samuel.

Eli’s sons were not faithful to the Lord, and because Eli knew this and did nothing about it, God was very displeased with him.  God told Samuel he was going to take judgment upon them.

God tells Samuel that Eli and his sons are passed the point of atonement and they will die for their sins.  Samuel reluctantly tells Eli what the Lord has revealed, but even knowing this, Eli continues to live his life in the same way.

Samuel eventually grows to know the Lord and becomes a prophet, priest, and judge.

As a prophet, God’s hands are upon Samuel and he speaks the word of the Lord.  Israel now knows that the silence of the Lord has now been broken.

What did we learn?

God does not like sinners that will not repent.  He will bring judgment upon them.

We braided this piece of twine and stitched it into a mat to represent a mat that Samuel would have probably slept on.  As you can see it has become a play mat for the beloved squinkies!

Ruth

ruth

Naomi, her husband, and 2 sons, lived in Israel when famine struck.  They decided to moved to another country where her 2 sons married foreign women, Ruth and Orpah.  After some time Naomi’s husband and sons died and she decided to move back to Israel.

Ruth decided to leave her home country and accompany Naomi on her journey back to Israel.  They had no idea what was in store for them upon their return.

They had nothing when they arrived, so Ruth went to pick barley out of the fields so they could eat.  The field owner was a man named Boaz, and he did not mind Ruth following the pickers and gathering the fallen barley.

Boaz, a relative of Naomi’s husband, eventually married Ruth and God blessed her with a son.  Naomi was so pleased to have a grandson.

Ruth’s wise decisions and loyalty carried her on to a joyous time in her life.

What did we learn?

Godly character can make you happy.  Ruth was blessed by her acts of loyalty and commitment.

 Our Bible Times Feast

053

For lunch we sampled some different foods that were popular during the Bible times.

We had grapes, dates, figs, apples, almonds, pistachios, watermelon, white raisins, goat cheese, barley grain and seed bread, and some sparkling white grape juice.

The kids enjoyed trying the different foods.  Big Ladybug seemed to like everything, but she is always good about trying new things.  Little Ladybug like the fruit and dates, but that was about it.  She did sing a little Yo Gabba Gabba though (or her version of it),  “Just try it, you’ll like it….I tried it, I like it!”  And my Little Lizard enjoyed eating some dates and raisins, then threw the rest on the floor.

For dinner we made a fish-shaped pizza with pepperoni scales.  The girls had a great time with this.  They also made their own little pizzas with the left over dough.

It was pretty messy……BUT delicious!!!

Science with Water:  Vanishing Water

This week we read about evaporation and condensation.

010

We set a little dish of water out on the window sill, it took 3 days for it to completely evaporate.

072

Big Ladybug also put ice in a jar so that she could observe the condensation that formed on the outside.

Did you know ???

Each day the sun evaporates 1,000,000,000,000 (a trillion) tons of water.

  • A single birch tree will give off 70 gallons of water per day in evaporation.
  • An acre of corn will give off 4,000 gallons of water per day in evaporation.
